More than 355 years ago, six women, under the guidance of a Jesuit priest, answered God's call to serve those in need Le Puy, France. What they set out to do, and did in fact accomplish, was a new idea in the seventeenth century. Their work was very relevant to the times in which they were living. In the true sense of the word, these original Sisters of St. Joseph were modern women--living in the present moment serving God and neighbor without distinction.
Throughout the history of our order, a succession of humble women have accomplished much in God's name, doing what has needed to be done at the time. Eight Sisters of St. Joseph left the motherhouse in Le Puy, France 140 years ago this year, to answer the call in the American South. |

The verandas of the Motherhouse in St. Augustine, such as this one with the southern exposure, are typical of old Florida architecture. We are known for our simplicity, our humility, and our Southern Hospitality. |
Those intrepid sisters, who came to serve those in need, founded our Florida community and established it's distinctive character.
Today, in the twenty-first century, we continue to do the work that needs to be done to serve God and neighbor without distinction. We invite you to spend some time on our website to learn more about us and our work or to reconnect with us, or simply to find a place of peace on the Internet where you can come to contemplate and pray.
If you feel called, and are interested in learning about becoming a Sister of St. Joseph, we invite you to go to the section entitled, Becoming a Sister. |
