Today we continue our mission within six of the seven dioceses located in the state of Florida. Our motherhouse is in St. Augustine, Florida, where it has been since 1866 when our first eight Sisters arrived from Le Puy, France in answer to a call for help from Bishop Augustin Verot.

We are guided ably by our council, under the direction of our General Superior, Sister Ann Kuhn, SSJ.

Council Members
Sister Elizabeth Marie Stoup, Assistant General Superior

We share our Charism with the other congregations of the Sisters of St. Joseph throughout the United States and follow the Constitution of the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Mission Statement

We, the Sisters of St. Joseph of St. Augustine, Florida are a congregation of women religious who have responded to the call of the Holy Spirit to live consecrated lives in community.

Empowered by the Holy Spirit, we participate in an ever deepening way in the mission of Jesus: "that all may be one as you, Father, are in me, and I in you; I pray that they may be one in us, that the world may believe that you sent me."

Our charism of union impels us to be Christ's healing and reconciling presence in the world today. We work to alleviate the conditions, which cause poverty, suffering, and oppression. Working to achieve union with neighbor and neighbor with God, we fulfill our mission through a diversity of ministries called forth by the ever-changing needs of the Church and the world.

In a rhythm of contemplation and courageous action, we undertake, in collaboration with our local bishops in the state of Florida, those works which best bring about God's kingdom.

Consensus Statement from the Constitution of the Sisters of Saint Joseph

From the central ideas of Jean Pierre Medaille, SJ, as drawn from the Primitive Constitutions

Stimulated by the Holy Spirit of love and receptive to God's inspirations, the Sister of St. Joseph moves always toward profound love of God and love of neighbor without disctinction, from whom she does not separate herself, and for whom, in the following of Christ, she works in order to achieve unity both of neighbor with neighbor and neighbor with God directly in this apostolate and indirectly through works of charity in humility, the spirit of the Incarnate Word, in sincere charity, the manner of St. Joseph whose name she bears, in an Ignatian-Salesian climate, that is, with an orientation toward excellence tempered by gentleness, peace, joy.
